How to Resize an Image

Resize any JPG, PNG, or WebP image in seconds. Learn what resizing actually changes, avoid the most common mistakes, and get a sharp result every time.

To resize an image, you change its pixel dimensions — its width and height — either to fit a specific space or to make the file smaller overall. The fastest way is to upload the image to a resizer, enter your target width and height, keep the aspect ratio locked unless you intentionally want to stretch it, and download the result.

What resizing actually changes

An image is a grid of pixels. A photo that is 4000×3000 pixels contains 12 million individual pixels. When you resize it down to 1200×900, you are creating a smaller pixel grid and the software recalculates the image to fit that new grid.

This process is called resampling. Resizing down is generally safer because you are removing detail that the smaller image does not need. Resizing up is more difficult because the software has to estimate pixel information that was not present in the original image.

Image dimensions and file size are not the same thing

Two things are commonly confused when people talk about resizing: pixel dimensions and file size.

  • Dimensions are the width and height of the image in pixels.
  • File size is how much storage the image uses, usually measured in KB or MB.
  • Resizing dimensions down often reduces file size, but it does not guarantee a specific KB target.
  • Compression is usually the better tool when your actual goal is a particular file size.

How to resize an image step by step

  1. Upload your image

    Choose the JPG, PNG, or WebP image you want to resize.

  2. Choose your target dimensions

    Enter the width and height you need, or choose a preset such as 1080×1080.

  3. Keep the aspect ratio locked

    Unless you deliberately need a different proportion, keep the aspect ratio locked so people and objects do not become stretched or squashed.

  4. Resize the image

    Apply the new dimensions and let the resizer create the smaller image.

  5. Check the result

    Make sure the image has the required dimensions, looks sharp, and is in the format you need.

  6. Download the result

    Save the resized image and use it wherever the new dimensions are required.

When should you resize an image?
